Why RSS ?

Posted by: latifaalmansouri on: March 27, 2009

RSS stands for: Really Simple Syndicate. That allows you to visit one page to view only the websites that have been updated without having to search through information you’ve already read or having to visit each site individually.

RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web, especially teachers who are looking for updated information & efficient resources. RSS allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. That surely saves time by not needing to visit each site individually, as well as you ensure your privacy by not needing to join each site’s email newsletter. The number of sites offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly and includes big names like Yahoo News.

 All what you need are:

  • 1. Create a Feed Reader account.

There are number of popular web-based feed readers available such as; My Yahoo, Bloglines, and Google Reader.

  • 2. Start subscribing your website that you are interested in into your Reader.

Once you create your Feed Reader, it is a matter of finding sites that syndicate content and adding their RSS feed to the list of feeds your Feed Reader checks. Many sites display a small icon with the acronyms RSS, XML, or RDF to let you know a feed is available. So check your favorite websites or blogs for feed icon and subscribe them to your Reader account.

As an IT teacher, I think receiving updated technology articles, blogs and newsletters are very useful in accessing, sharing, searching and time saving. I am pleased with the useful, updated, technology articles that reach me so easily at my Reader account and I benefit from the usability and variety of data.

Should I Blog?

I’ve been reading other’s blogs for awhile, and using it for a period of time for my studies as a Bachelor of IT Education student at Abu Dhabi Women’s College, but really I didn’t think about using it seriously for my own professional development.

I found Michele Martin’s article about: Guide to Blogging for Personal Branding is the most relevant post to my career development as an IT teacher as well as a student in Educational degree.

Promoting my knowledge and sharing my experience can be easily presented through blogging my thoughts and experience. I think the main advantage of blogging is to use it as a valuable tool for my own ongoing learning and professional development. That will expand my engagement with topics to stay up-to-date on what’s happening by connecting to others specialists who are online.

I am aware that the blog can be a technique to write my diary of developing my skills and experiencing in which I am learning. Also it is a way in which I teach people as I am learning, which I like to do usually. More to the point, as long I like reading and writing I think I have the interest to blog my experience regularly.

Will you join us to post your thoughts about our ongoing learning and get advantage of the usability of blogging feature to enrich our knowledge and share experience?
